Council proclaims April 22 Earth Day

Yorkton Council has designated April 22, as Earth Day in the city. “April 22 has been designated as Earth Day worldwide.

In April 2013 Yorkton Regional High School SRC members Shayna Kemp and Shelby McGillivray celebrated Earth Day.

Yorkton Council has designated April 22, as Earth Day in the city.
“April 22 has been designated as Earth Day worldwide. Earth Day promotes the opportunity to connect with nature and support a healthy sustainable environment,” explained Paula Maier, chairperson with the Yellowhead Flyway Birding Trail Association, (YFBTA), who made the request at the regular meeting of Council Monday.
Maier noted, “We are a non-profit group engaged in learning about, advocating on behalf of and celebrating the natural world. Our mission is to attract people of all ages to the organization, its programs and trails within our geographic area.”
The YFBTA is also planning to build on the day.
“In keeping with our commitment to learning about and celebrating the natural world we are sponsoring an event on April 22 called Celebrate Earth Day with YFBTA. This event includes knowledgeable speakers who have varied backgrounds and interests in the nature world,” said Maier.
Kelsie Marchand will speak about her research of Western Painted Turtles in the Wascana River system.
Kenton Lysak, senior interpreter for the Meewasin Valley Authority will speak about Prairie Ecosystems.
Ray Poulin, a head curator at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum will speak on Snake Ecology.
Harold Fisher will speak on banding owl species in the boreal forest.
