Health region initiatives being undertaken in Kamsack were among items to concern town council at its regular meeting on December 12.

Council accepted the minutes of the December meeting of the board of the Assiniboine Valley Health and Wellness Foundation and then, accepting a recommendation of the board, invited the CEO of Sunrise Health Region to meet with council to discuss the impact to the community of the several of the Region’s initiatives, including the methadone clinic and harm reduction program.

Council accepted with regret, the resignation of Barry Golay from the Kamsack Volunteer Fire Department effective January 1.

It was agreed to transfer outstanding taxes to tax title property the following: 321 Miles Street, 534 Third Street, 138 Decorby Street East and 322 Park Street West.

It was decided to hold regular meetings of council on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, excepting July, August and December when only one meeting will be held. The meetings in January were set at January 16 and 30.

The administrator was instructed to write a letter to the RCMP to express “the growing concern in the community about the lack of police presence in town.”

It was agreed to provide a letter of support to the National Doukhobor Heritage Village (NDHV) for its 100th anniversary of its prayer home in 2017 and the Canada 150 celebrations during the year.

“Since 1900 the Doukhobors have played a historic role in building the community,” said a letter to council from Walter Ostoforoff, chair of the NDHV board. “The village board is looking for support from the Canadian government to undertake activities that will leave a legacy at the village/museum and provide an opportunity for the community to celebrate the heritage and culture of the Doukhobor people.

“In addition to the usual number of visitors that visit the village/museum each year, many additional visitors are expected from other parts of Canada during the weekend of July 15 and 16,” the letter said.

The administrator was instructed to respond to the minister of the environment indicating the need to retain funding for the former NPC site cleanup and is to enlist the support of the MP and MLA.
