Crossroads Credit Union presented a cheque in the amount of $3,000 to the Canora Composite School (CCS) Community Council on December 5.

The money was used towards the purchase of furniture for the school library to create an appealing reading corner to encourage the students to read and do quiet work, said Leanne Woloshyn, Crossroads human resources officer.

Designing the reading corner was a collaboration between CCS students Sabrina Moshenko and Echo Kozmanuik, and Jennifer Bisschop, CCS library technician.

Moshenko said that because the green trim throughout the library could not be removed, they decided to work with it in designing the reading corner.

“We are very fond of nature, so we worked hard to create a nature theme throughout the reading corner, primarily buying furniture that was in earthy tones, such as green, taupe, and mushroom. We wanted to ensure the space was functional; it was important to us that the furniture was not only comfortable but able to be used as small workspaces.”

Moshenko said the Crossroads donation allowed them to purchase commercial-grade furniture for the reading space that is durable and fire retardant, while the armrests on the chairs work well for doing homework. She said they managed to include fish in the reading corner.

“We were able to purchase an assortment of greenery and a fish tank which completed our nature aesthetic.”

The purpose of the Crossroads Community Investment Fund is to assist non-profit organizations and provide communities with a strong foundation to build upon, said Woloshyn.

In 2017 it has awarded funds to 17 non-profit organizations for a total of $25,000.
