Improper use of candles has been cited as the cause of an apartment fire Monday.

SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in an apartment building in the 1300 block of Temperance Street on Monday, March 6, at 8:10 a.m.

Upon arriving, fire crews saw smoke coming from the upper floor hallway.

The evacuation was also in progress and almost all residents were already out of the structure as firefighters began searching the third floor of the apartment building.

The firefighters located the third-floor suite with a mattress that caused the smoke, with the apartment’s tenant using a portable extinguisher from the hallway to put out the fire.

The fire crews used the water pump tank to ensure the fire was out.

As determined by the investigator, improper use of candles caused the fire, with damage estimated at $300. The building has been turned back to the property manager.
