Fourteen teams compete at annual Sandy Beach slo-pitch tournament

By Marlene Jacquemart

The annual Sandy Beach Slo-Pitch tournament northwest of Norquay was held on June 18 with 14 teams entered.

It was a beautiful hot day, perfect for sunburns and sometimes windy enough for the ball to confuse the outfielders. A Canadian flag on a new flag pole welcomed people as they entered the grounds.

Winning the A side was The Skeeters who defeated The Bomb Squad, while Where Dem Pitches At? defeated the Master Batters to top the B side.

All the teams were of Norquay except for Charlie's Imports of Regina, Hudson Bay Rejects of Hudson Bay, Louisville Chuggers of Swan Plain and Dirty Dancers of Canora.

The rest of the teams were: Balls of Fury, Foul Balls, South of 49ers, Sandy Beach Bruised Beavers, Class of '06 and the Goldless Glovers.

Two inflatable bouncing structures, sponsored by Pioneer Grain, were in continuous use by the children. Pioneer Grain also donated ice cream cups which were served to everyone free of charge. Two swings, a huge sand pile, a riding “helicopter” and an “airplane” kept the toddlers busy.

Norquay and surrounding area residents donated pies and condiments, while volunteering to work in the kitchen. There was an abundance of hamburgers, hot dogs, subs, and tacos-in-bags, as well as other foods and soft drinks.

Volunteers had removed the partition in the kitchen and served confectionery items in the same area as the rest of the food.

As soon as it got dark, fireworks were set off.

There was a beer garden all day with a DJ playing music while people danced into the night.
