Good Spirit Acres continues golf tournaments into the fall

Good Spirit Acres’ Carol Olsen is sad to say that the summer is winding down, but the hope is that fall will continue on long enough for many events.

Good Spirit Acres’ Carol Olsen is sad to say that the summer is winding down, but the hope is that fall will continue on long enough for many events.

The golf course has been in wonderful shape this season, thanks to Brad Parker and his crew of maintenance workers, Olsen said.

The Senior Golf Club held a wind-up lunch on September 1 with a great turn-out of golfers and spouses.  Tyco Huska and the other chefs served lunch.

Senior golf will continue into fall every Tuesday and Thursday morning. Everyone is encouraged to join.

The Monday Men's Night wind-up was on September 5, but Men’s Night will continue every Monday.Shirts and skins competitions, green fee specials, beverage specials and supper will follow. Interested golfers may call the clubhouse to sign up. Non-members may also golf, and the golf club has had an increase in men joining them this summer.

Friday Couples Night has been a great success, with a growing number of people joining in the fun, Olsen said. The events will continue into fall as well on Friday evenings.  All are welcome, including non-members.

Women golfers have also had an increase in members this season.  Ladies’ Night is every Thursday evening.

Residents of Good Spirit Acres as well as many patrons from Good Spirit Provincial Park, Sun Shadows RV Park, Yorkton and area went for meals at Putter's Restaurant, which was open all summer. Huska served some great meals.  There were special theme nights and Roughrider game nights, which included live entertainment. Olsen says that the increase of golfers this season could be because golfers knew they could always have drinks, snacks or meals following a round of golf.

The Toilet Seat Golf Tournament was held on September 11. Everyone in the community as well as seasonal summer residents were welcome to join. The event was followed by a potluck supper at the camp kitchen at Spilchen Meadows.

There has been a streak of vandalism at Spilchen Meadows, with the disappearance of some of the shuffleboard discs and breakage of all the push poles. The discs have now been found, Olsen said, though most of them are damaged. New equipment has to be ordered and a new system will be set in place for use next summer.

The mast on the boat had to be removed this summer as it was sheared off. The community association will be installing a new one this fall. The association also plans to finish installing the garden rails around the James Memorial area, and are currently looking into the price of windows and a door for the camp kitchen.

The annual Christmas dinner has been booked for November 26 at the Park Recreation Hall with 3G Friends hired as caterers.

It is with regret that the hamlet board accepted Don Thompson's resignation. The council acknowledges all the work he did on behalf of the residents of Good Spirit Acres.

Some road repairs have been done this summer, but Olsen said there is still more construction coming. One light standard will be installed on the transfer road at this time. The general meeting for the board will be held on September 18 at the Golf Couse Club House.

The Canora Beach landfill is now closed. All large garbage can be taken to the new RM transfer site, which is open every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The Good Spirit Market had a busy summer, and has now started its fall hours.

There are a few new home owners in Good Spirit Acres. Wayne Duchnitsky sold his home to Connie Argue, who said she has enjoyed summers in the area for years, and hopes that with the purchase of the home, she will be able to spend more time at Good Spirit.

Ron Merriman sold his home to the young family of Wes and Tamsen Dierker.

Olsen said she hopes that the new residents will enjoy many years at Good Spirit Acres.

After 15 years of writing newsletters, Olsen will retire to allow someone else to do the job. The hamlet council and community association would like to hear from any volunteers.
