To celebrate the national holiday and the many successes of Canadian history, the Invermay Golden Age Club held its Canada Day Milestones Celebration on July 1.

The event began with presentations, and the first came from Mike Kaminski, the Golden Age Club’s president. After he shared his greetings from the club to the community, Const. Nik Kyosev shared his experience with immigrating to Canada as he celebrated the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian immigration.

Hugh Nerlien, a Saskatchewan Party MLA, also recognized the anniversary during his speech.

Alexa Bikoraly, who is an Invermay School student, relayed her experiences meeting Canadian youths in Vancouver and Ottawa during the National Youth Ambassador Caucus with Global Vision, as well as her plans to be involved with the 150th birthday of Canada in 2017. After the speeches, Kaminski presented a PowerPoint of milestones in Canadian history.

A lunch was held after the presentations, and featured cake and ice cream as a celebration of Canada’s birthday. Three people won the club’s raffle of Canadian Mint coins. Ed Redman won the FIFA Women’s World Cup coin, Donald Smith won the Celebration of Love coin, and Martha Birrell won a Winter Fun coin.

Winners of the Canada Day student contest were also announced, and included Jasmine Kowalyshyn, Ellissa Karcha, and Addison Enge (Kindergarten and Grade 1); Bailey Maier, Clouie Carbungal, and Amber McDonald (grades 2, 3, and 4); Christian Carbungal, Trinity Fidek and Jayden Swain (grades 5, 6, and 7); and Brittany Kowalyshyn, Samantha Wallin, and Shaelyn Serron (Grade 12).

Elaine Hughes of Archerwill provided entertainment through musical performances, as well as group sing-alongs. Following was coffee and a movie.

The movie, Freedom Had a Price, is a documentary about the discrimination and alien-interment operation Ukrainians faced during the First World War. A release by the Invermay Golden Age club said the movie brought up excellent points about why such a horrific event has not been taught in Canadian history classes.
