The fall season has been very busy and eventful for staff and students at Invermay School. On October 11, the cross-country team competed at Cherrydale Golf Course.

           Congratulations to all of the athletes for enduring the difficult weather conditions to complete their races. Students who finished in the top 10 were April Grychowski, Jessie Grychowski, Cole Serron and Danika Soltys. Also finishing in the top 10 and qualifying to compete at the provincial meet in Delisle on October 15 were Jade Fidek, Melony Koturbash and Brayden Serron. At provincials, Serron finished his five-kilometre run placing 46th out of 83 junior boys, Fidek finished her three-kilometre run placing 80th out of 98 midget girls, and Koturbash completed her three-kilometre run placing 88th out of 98 midget girls.

            The School Community Council hosted its first ASK activity of the new school year on October 18. Students stayed after school and had a blast making Halloween crafts.

            Education Week was held from October 17 to 21 at Invermay School. A book fair was open all week in the library and offered books and other items for students and community members to purchase. It was very successful with over $2,000 worth of sales! Remy Fidek won the draw for $25 worth of books, and his classroom will also receive $25 worth of books.

            On the first day of Education Week, members of the Red Cross group provided students with delicious homemade muffins for a morning snack. On October 18, students enjoyed a presentation from Shelwin House in Yorkton, which is a domestic violence shelter for women and children. Everyone learned more about respecting others, honesty, and having good relationships.

            On the evening of October 19, staff and students of Invermay School hosted their annual Italian night. It was very successful and everyone enjoyed the delicious Italian meal. The staff acknowledged Wadena Co-op for donating many of the supplies. The afternoon of October 21was packed full of fun activities. Kindergarten to Grade 2 students had a chance to show their creativity as they painted and decorated pumpkins. Tammy Mickle-Hopkins spent the afternoon with grades 3 to 5 students teaching them how to use different drawing and painting techniques.

         Grades 6 and 7 students had the opportunity to learn how to make moccasins with Shirley Wolfe-Keller. Cheryl Knight used her sewing expertise to help grades 8 and 9 students make their own pillowcases. Grades 10 to 12 students spent their time learning how to make homemade pizzas, and then enjoyed eating them after!

            On October 25, grades 8 and 9 PAA (practical applied arts) students and their teacher, Nathan Hrynchyshyn, made perogies at the St. Anthony’s Parish Hall in Rama. Experienced senior women from Margo, Invermay and Rama shared their knowledge and skills in making the Ukrainian dish. The students experienced the complete process from peeling the potatoes to pinching the dough. When the work was complete, everyone enjoyed eating the fresh perogies made, as well as a dessert of raspberries and ice cream.

            In the afternoon that day, Aileen Audette of Winnipeg came to the school to give a wonderful storytelling presentation to Kindergarten to Grade 5 students. She educated the children about the importance of keeping the environment healthy. Also that afternoon, a powerful message was delivered to grades 6 to 12 students about the dangers of drinking and driving. Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) speaker Cheryl Tofin came to the school to speak about her daughter who was killed in a car accident at 16 due to drinking and driving. This presentation was a very memorable experience and left a huge impact.

            On October 26 a pizza sale was held to raise money for new gym supplies. Everyone enjoyed the delicious pizza served.

            A staff-versus-students volleyball game was held in the gym at noon on October 27. A few students from grades 10 to 12 played six staff members. Both teams tried their best, but the students ended up winning with a final score of 27 to 18. Later that afternoon, the Student Representative Council (SRC) put on a movie afternoon. Kindergarten to Grade 5 students watched Charlotte’s Web, and grades 6 to 12 students watched Ghostbusters. The SRC also served popcorn and floats during the movies.

            The SCC held a movie night in the gym on October 28. Students had a great evening watching the movie Ice Age: Collision Course. Popcorn and juice were also sold. 

            Staff and students of Invermay School all dressed up in their scary and creative Halloween costumes on October 31. The SRC created a haunted house in the library. Students in each grade had the chance to walk through the spooky maze, and some were given quite the scare! In the afternoon the whole school participated in the annual Halloween parade in the gym. Everyone showed off his or her great costumes, and prizes were awarded to the two students in each grade with the best costumes.

            Following the parade, elementary students went to the Invermay Health Centre to show the residents their costumes and sing Halloween songs. After school the Red Cross group went around Invermay collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the food bank in Yorkton. The group thanked everyone who made a donation.

            On November 5, the senior girls volleyball team attended conferences in Norquay. The team placed first, qualifying for regionals. The girls played at regionals on November 12 in Sturgis, placing second and earning their way to provincials. Good luck to the team who will be competing at provincials in Muenster!
