The final month of 2016 was very busy and eventful for staff and students at Invermay School. The month started with a pizza sale on December 1. All proceeds went towards new basketball jerseys. On December 9 the yearbook committee hosted the “Photos with Santa” fundraiser. The group set up a Christmas tree in the library for a festive background. Staff, students and community members were all welcome to get their pictures taken with Santa.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) organized many fun Christmas activities during the last week of school before the break. Each day, staff and students dressed up according to a theme and participated in a variety of games and activities at noon. Spirit Week started on December 12 with everyone coming to school in his or her pajamas and messy hair. The activity that day was a relay race, where students had to transfer marbles from one stocking to another stocking that was located across the gym.

On December 13 we all dressed up as our favorite Christmas characters or decorations. The activity at noon was a life-sized tick-tack-toe relay race where students from each team had to run across the gym to move its markers to create a straight line.

The next day was red and green day, and at noon an obstacle course relay race was held in the gym. On December 15, staff and students had a chance to dress up in their fanciest clothes for formal day. A dance was also held in the gym at noon for everyone to participate in. The last day of Spirit Week was Tacky Christmas Clothing Day. In the morning staff and students were treated to a band concert in the gym. Band members from schools in our district performed a variety of holiday-themed songs incorporating a number of different instruments. Everyone got into the Christmas spirit and enjoyed the show.

On December 20 the elementary students performed their annual Christmas concert in the Invermay Community Hall. The emcees for the concert were Shayna Dubas and Katelyn Rioch.

Kindergarten to Grade 2 students presented a play called The Littlest Christmas Tree. This was followed by The Night the Reindeer Rocked! acted out by the grades 3-5 students. The audience greatly enjoyed the show and all the time the students spent practicing paid off. Santa and Mrs. Claus also made an appearance and handed out treat bags to all of the children. The Christmas dinner, prepared and cooked by Grade 12 students and their parents, was then served. It was a turkey-and-ham meal with all of the trimmings. The families of the grades 6-11 students contributed food to the Christmas dinner and the Rama and Wadena Co-op stores donated the turkeys and hams for the dinner.

After an event-filled month, students began their Christmas break on December 21 and returned to school on January 4. Happy new year and all the best in 2017!
