Jess Olson deemed top fisherman at derby

            Jess Olson of Preeceville won the biggest fish caught at the Nelson Lake ice fishing derby on March 18. The Endeavour  Eagles club sponsored the first-time derby.

            There were 84 pre-drilled holds with 36 northern pike caught during the derby," said Gary Jakubowski, organizer. "The weather was not bad even though the wind was pretty cold but fishermen enjoyed the derby.

            “This was the first year we sponsored the event and will continue this as a yearly family event," he said.

            Jess Olson caught the largest fish that measured 22.5 inches. Stacey Neitling caught the second-largest fish which measured 21 and 5/8 inches. Oliver Prouse won third for his fish that measured 21.5 inches.

            The first fish caught was a northern pike hauled in by Klolton Shewchuk. It had measured 19 inches.
