Kamsack Community Choir “recycles” songs for Christmas concert

For its seventh annual Christmas concert, the Kamsack Community Choir chose to revisit some of the more popular tunes the choir had performed in the past.

Christmas Revisited was the name of the concert staged by the choir at Westminster Memorial United Church in Kamsack on Sunday. The choir was under the direction of Susan Bear with accompaniment by Marilyn Marsh on piano. Gwen Reilkoff was the emcee.

Songs sung by the choir included: Celebrate Christmas, Come Run Ye Shepherds, Glory on a Christmas Morn, Beautiful Star of Bethlehem, Night of All Nights, Welcome the Child of Light, We’ll Have a Ragtime Holiday, A Caribbean Noel, On Christmas Day and The Birthday of a King.

Zennovia Duch, Susan Bear, Kathie Galye and John Adamyk performed as a quartet, and then combinations of those four performed as trios and duets. The songs performed by the quartet, trios or duets were: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Holly and the Ivy, One Small Lamb, Mary Had a Boy Child, Joy on a Christmas Morn, Star of Advent, Frosty Winter Snow and Calypso Lullaby.

Marilyn Marsh and Diane Jones performed piano duets to O Come, O Come Emmanuel and Sleigh Ride and Ashley Hollett, a guest performer at all the concerts, performed True Blue Miracle.

Guest artists included: Darren Kitsch on a drum; Kyler Kitsch, trumpet; Kennan Kitsch, bells, and Kathleen Raabel, flute.

Following an intermission, when coffee and dainties were available, Audrey Horkoff, a member of the choir, paid tribute to Marilyn Marsh and Susan Bear.

“History tells us that during the dark days of the concentration camps during the Second World War, the music could not be silenced; it provided an escape, even if only for moments,” Horkoff said. “In today’s world I believe we need more music and less hatred.

“We thank you for your talent, time and generosity,” Horkoff said as she called Marsh and Bear to the podium.

“Without you there would not be a community choir to bring music into our lives,” she said. “Please accept our humble gifts on behalf of all your admirers in the choir.”
