Canora residents, as well as visitors from Yorkton and Edmonton, honoured the Keen Age Centre members who celebrated a birthday over the summer with a social.

A total of 65 people attended the celebration held on August 28 at the Keen Age Centre. The social included performances by three dancers, a band performance, a barbecue, and cakes for the birthday celebrants.

The three Canora girls who performed during the social were Felicity Mydonick, Bailee Zuravloff, and Jenna Korol.

Mydonick has been dancing since she was four years old, and currently takes classes in ballet, jazz, hip hop, contemporary dance, musical theatre, song and dance, lyrical dance and Ukrainian dance. She said her favourite is hip hop, which has subgenres including diva, crump, house, and street.

Mydonick has competed and attended workshops across Saskatchewan, as well as in Edmonton and Kelowna in Canada, and Seattle and Los Angeles in the USA. During the social, she performed a hip hop routine choreographed by the group White Chocolate in Edmonton, and a contemporary routine choreographed by a Toronto dance teacher. Keen Age Centre members said it was delightful to watch her dance.

Bailee Zuravloff is the 10-year-old daughter of Darren and Amanda Zuravloff and the granddaughter of David and Lorraine Dariechuk and John and Shirley Zuravloff. Bailee Zuravloff began dancing at the age of three, and performed in Ukrainian dance recitals with Extravadance for three years. She now performs ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop.

Bailee Zuravloff began competing in dance festivals two years after joining dance, and performed a recital at Disneyland in 2014. During the social, she performed a solo tap routine and a ballet duet with Korol.

Jenna Korol is the daughter of David and Teresa Korol. Her grandmother, Sylvia Korol, was present at the social. Jenna Korol has danced for seven years, starting with Ukrainian dancing at the age of three. She joined ballet and jazz three years later, and at the social, she performed a ballet duet with Bailee Zuravloff.

The Keen Age Centre members said they were “enthralled” by the young dancers, and after, they welcomed a band to perform. Randy and Patty Zayshley performed with Wayne Dudeck and provided music for the social attendants to dance to.

The July and August birthday celebrants were recognized before supper began. Lorraine Katelnikoff said a dinner prayer before everyone enjoyed burgers cooked by Charlie Rudachyk and salads made by Olga Baulin and Gladys Grodzinski.

The Keen Age Centre members acknowledged the volunteers who helped with preparations and clean-up, Jean Zarazun for organizing entertainment, Etta Fletcher for collecting donations at the door, Edith Kotzer for photography and management, and Stan Palka for setting up tables and chairs. They also thanked Elsie Obodiak, Alice Lanstad, Gladys Grodzinski, Madeline Haning, John Fehr and Mike Zeeben for providing cake.
