Keen Age Society celebrates birthdays and enjoys Ukrainian entertainment

Birthday celebrations, potlucks, and Ukrainian music were just a few of the things guests enjoyed at the Keen Age Society’s recent socials.

The Keen Age Centre was the site for a social on October 23, when birthday celebrants for October and September were congratulated. A potluck supper was also held for the 32 guests who spent the afternoon playing cards, shuffleboard, and pool.

The next birthday social was held for the November and December birthday celebrants on November 13 with 42 people attending. Entertainment for the afternoon was provided by Willie Jakubowski, who played the violin and harmonica; his wife Lynn Jakubowski, who played the accordion, and Stella Holmes, who played the guitar. They entertained by singing various songs, including Ukrainian music, according to Edith Kotzer, a spokesperson for the Keen Age Centre.

“We enjoyed the nostalgic songs from our era which brought back lots of old memories from our younger days,” said Kotzer.

“It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. Willie is a great entertainer.”

A lunch was prepared by Olga Baulin and Gladys Grodzinski, while birthday cake after the lunch was provided by Bernice Rakochy, Elsie Carsten, and Olga Baulin. Lorraine Katelnikoff gave a thank you before the meal.

Others who helped with the event were Etta Fletcher, the greeter; Edith Kotzer, the photographer and Jean Zarazun, who was the social convener. She received a large round of applause for arranging the entertainment, said Kotzer.

Kotzer said she thanked all who helped with the socials.
