SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Police Service is set to file charges against a person found in the backyard of a vacant burning structure in the 100 Block of Avenue N South on Saturday, Nov. 19.
Saskatoon Fire Department crews — three fire engines, one ladder truck, a rescue unit and the Battalion Chief — were dispatched to the structure fire at 4:14 p.m. Smoke could be seen from the structure’s second story when they arrived.
Firefighters entered the house to extinguish the fire while another group searched to see if any persons were still inside. Fire crews found a male in the rear yard covered in soot but not injured, and no other person was found inside the house.
SFD turned over the male to the police after the fire investigator concluded that the vacant structure fire was deliberately set with garbage being lit in the dining room. The damage was estimated at $50,000.
Charges are pending and being laid by Saskatoon police investigators and the structure was re-secured by SFD officials.
The SFD is reminding the public to call Saskatoon police at 306-975-8300 if they see suspicious activity in their neighbourhood.
