Capt. Velvet Pomedli, an area cadet officer from Shilo, Man., will be the reviewing officer at the 59th annual ceremonial review and guest speaker at the awards banquet for the Kamsack air cadet squadron next week.

The ceremonial review will be held at the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute on May 18.

Born in a small town in Saskatchewan, Capt. Pomedli was raised on a farm near Pleasantdale, whre she lived until she got married in 1983 to Leslie Pomedli. The couple moved to his farm about four kilometres down the road to farm with his family. They have three children, Eric who lives and farms in Pleasantdale; Trina, who is married with one child McKenna, and lives in Vanderhoof, B.C., and Stephanie who lives and works in Regina.

Capt. Pomedli joined the cadets program in 1997 and worked with the Melfort squadron as commanding officer for eight years, and then training officer for four years while she assisted with transport and summer movements in Regina.  In 2009 she became the area cadet officer and worked out of Saskatoon with 11 air cadet squadrons around the province.

In 2011 she moved to Canadian Forces Base Shilo where she currently holds the position as area cadet officer at Brandon and assists eight Manitoba squadrons with their training during the training year. She also assists with regional directed activities when needed.

Some of the experiences Pomedli has received through the cadet program include: being an international exchange escort officer to Australia; spending three years at summer training centres at Penhold and Cold Lake, and visiting and touring Canada with cadets.

“And the greatest reward is working week-to-week with the squadron staff and cadets throughout the region,” she said.
