Michael Owchar received the Good Spirit School Division board of education’s fifth annual Student of Distinction Award on Friday.

This award is handed out every year during Education Week, said Shannon Leson, a member of the board of education.

“This year’s theme is “Celebrating Each Student” and we love coming to schools to celebrate,” he said. “This is one of the best things about being a board member – spending time in school with you. We take every chance to highlight your achievements and it’s amazing to be able to do this in a big school division with 28 schools and students of all ages.”

Leson presented a plaque to Owchar and another plaque was provided to the school to keep and display.

Leson went back to the nomination of Owchar to read what his nominators said was special about him.

“This student always has a positive attitude and treats his fellow classmates and teachers with respect; definitely a bucket-filler. This student is a great leader that cares about others and is quick to help someone in need. This student is a dedicated Safety Patroller and takes his job as bus captain very seriously. This student will take younger students by the hand to make sure they do not miss the bus and that they get on the bus safely. This student is very enthusiastic about making new students to our school feel very welcome and is a reading buddy to the younger students of our school.”

Leson said that Owchar always gets his work done and likes to set goals to work towards. This student is trained as a lunchroom mediator and takes pride in helping younger students at lunch time.

He enjoys learning and taking part in discussions, and teachers say he is successful and an enjoyable student to teach. Owchar pushes ahead and always wants to know more, working well with peers.

This student enjoys being part of CJES and is excited to take part in all school events and Spirit Day Activities, said Leson. This student loves the outdoors and fishing, hunting and farming are a big part of his life. For example, Owchar is involved in the Assiniboine River Archery Club, the River Ridge Wildlife Federation, the Swimming Club, and Cross-Country running program.

Leson said that Owchar is very much appreciated for his citizenship, good sense

of humour and enthusiasm towards everything he belongs to.
