New playground equipment installed for new combined Sturgis school

The newly renamed Sturgis Composite School received an interior and exterior makeover to accommodate the elementary students into the existing high school.

The newly renamed Sturgis Composite School received an interior and exterior makeover to accommodate the elementary students into the existing high school. The exterior upgrades included making a playground for the elementary students at the south side of the school.

Many community volunteers worked together to do the ground work and installation of new and some existing equipment. A work bee was held July 18 and concluded on July 20.

"The new equipment was purchased from a company in Watrous and a supervisor from the company helped to ensure the installation was done correctly," said Jean Babiuk, Sturgis Community Council chairperson.

There were a few pieces of playground equipment that were moved from the Sturgis Elementary School.

"The lay of the land determined where pieces would be installed, Babiuk said. The playground equipment featured two large main structures, six separate pieces, a swing set and a tire swing set.

“Everything is installed and we are waiting for pea gravel and sand to be hauled in under and around the equipment and we will be planting a durable grass seed," she said.

"There were approximately 30 volunteers throughout the three days who helped with the entire process," said Lisa Serdachny, committee member.

The school will be officially welcoming the new equipment and thanking all volunteers during Education Week in October.
