Several items regarding the Norquay Trade Show, which was held March 18 and 19 were discussed by members of the Norquay Recreation Board during its regular meeting of March 14.
Activities at the skating rink have now concluded after a very active season, Ruth Demetrick said in a report from the Communiplex Management Board. “All the new lights in the facility, including the canteen and the rotunda, have been installed and they have made a big improvement. Various community groups continue to raise funds towards the renovation project and we thank them for all their efforts.”
Regarding curling, Vaughn Demetrick said that the seniors’ bonspiel was held February 22 to 26, with 29 rinks entered; the Legion Bonspiel, March 5 and 6 with eight teams; the women’s bonspiel, March 8 to 13 with 15 rinks, and the men’s bonspiel, March 16 to 20.
Wing nights will continue to be held on Friday nights, with the last one on April 29, Demetrick said. The draw for the 55-inch smart TV will be made at that time.
“Additional volunteers to help run the wing nights are always welcome,” he said, adding that the search for an ice-maker continues.
With the nice weather, the Walking Club is coming to an end for this season, but everyone is encouraged to continue this vital part of aging healthy by keeping active, Laura Dahl said.
Speaking about Norquay School activities, Stacy Rubletz said that the senior boys basketball team placed second at Conference finals in Preeceville on March 5, which sent the team on to Regional finals in Canora on March 11 and 12. The boys placed third at Regionals and 12th overall in the province. The senior drama dessert theatre will be held April 7 at the Norquay gym, she said. Graduation pictures are to be taken on April 8, and the junior students’ play, The Wizard of Oz, will be performed April 13 at the Covenant Church.
The perogy supper date has been changed to April 27 at the school gymnasium, Rubletz said.
Regarding soccer, Melissa Czornobay said that a reorganizational meeting will be held in early April and volunteers for the new executive as well as coaches are needed to start this season.
Speaking about the NICE Centre, Iris Nokinsky said that the home care nurses and the nurse practitioner continue to use the building once a month and the 2016 memberships are now on sale.
Nicole Korpusik said that she and Reagan Foster attended a two-day “Chamber College” that was put on by the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce in Saskatoon on March 2 and 3 and that they would be sharing the information and ideas with the Norquay Chamber of Commerce.
Members of the Ukrainian Dance club will be serving lunch at the Norquay Trade Show on March 18, Lilia Livingstone said. The dancers are continuing to prepare for competitions April 8 to 10 in Russell, Man. and on May 5 to 8 in Yorkton.
The spring concert will be held April 24 at the Norquay Communiplex. The draw for the spring concert raffle will be made at that time, Livingstone said. First prize is $500; second prize, a $100 gift card to Rawhides Restaurant; and third, is a Ukrainian feast in a cooler.
The Health Auxiliary has started to sell raffle tickets for the raffle baskets, Iris Nokinsky said. The draws for the baskets would be made at the trade show.
Nokinsky thanked those who donated items.
Speaking about Legion matters, Laura Dahl said that members of the Legion distributed more than $900 in prizes for the Legion’s annual Remembrance Day essay, posters and poems contest. Monthly potluck suppers continue on the last Friday of the month.
Regarding the Tail Twisters 4-H Club, Ruth Demetrick said that a general meeting was held March 1 at the Norquay School Library and that the club’s public speaking competition was to be held on March 20 at the Norquay Legion Hall. The first and second-place speakers in each age category qualified to advance to the district level on April 3, she said. This event will be hosted by the Norquay Tail Twisters Club and will be held in Norquay.
A project meeting for the light horse project was held March 13 at the Norquay School library where a video on arena etiquette was viewed in preparation for the upcoming riding clinics, she said. The first riding clinic of the season will be held on April 1 and 2 at Naclia’s Riding Arena, with Heather Barzele instructing. A tentative date for the light horse project achievement day was set for June 25.
Melissa Czornobay said that the figure skating club held its carnival on February 28 “with a nice turnout of family and friends to cheer on the skaters.” Skill testing was held on March 2, the wind-up was to be held on March 9, but was cancelled due to the weather.
Discussing the Timberline Band Association, Reagan Foster said that the senior band travelled to Saskatoon on March 17 to 19 to attend the Saskatoon Symphony, as well as have lessons at the University of Saskatchewan and to participate in some fun activities. However, no senior band students from Norquay were able to attend due to the drama festival being held in Yorkton at the same time.
Nicole Korpusik said that the Norquay Nighthawks had a very successful hockey tournament on February 20 when three women’s teams and three men’s teams participated. The Nighthawks are to attend a tournament in Estevan on April 7 to 10.
Stacy Rubletz said that a start-up meeting for the minor ball executive was to have been held last week.
In a discussion regarding the Canada Day events in Norquay, it was said that all community groups were invited to participate by hosting or organizing a sport, culture event, recreation activity, or food booth to add to the larger events already planned, which so far includes a baseball tournament during the day and a street dance in the evening.
Each group on the recreation board is requested to have discussions at its next group meeting and to bring Canada Day ideas and plans back to the recreation board meeting in April.
