Norquay Recreation Board prepares for annual meeting in June

            Attending were: Melissa Czornobay, Reagan Foster, Ruth Demetrick, Vaughan Demetrick, Delphine Howard, Nicole Korpusik, Lilia Livingstone, Ken Newell, Iris Nokinsky, Stacy Rubletz and Mary Sellers.

            Speaking on behalf of the Communiplex Management Board (CMB), Ruth Demetrick said that hall rental rates have been adjusted so that a three-day rental for weddings, etc. will now include rental of the kitchen and will be $800; two-day rental, $550; one-day rental, $400; half-day rental, $200, and lobby/rotunda rent, $150.

            Demetrick said that the CMB is also looking for a member of the community to fill one vacant position on the board.

            Discussing curling, Ken Newell said that the wind-up was held April 29, and was very successful. The draw was made for the TV and the winner was Chris Robb of Edmonton. Results of the Club 100 draws were: Kiah Simpson, first; Jerry Larson, second, and Chris Robb, third.

            Talking about Norquay School activities, Stacy Rubletz reported that: the graduation celebration will be held May 27; the grades 3 to 6 field trip to Regina will be on June 3 and 4; the elementary track-and-field day is set for June 17. The district track-and-field meet was held in Yorkton May 25 and 26, and provincial meet is set for June 3 and 4 in Regina.

Children born in 2011 are eligible for Kindergarten registration for the 2016-17 school year, Rubletz said.

Regarding soccer, Melissa Czornobay said that there are six teams from minis to seniors, and practices are being held on Tuesdays, with games on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Hotdog sales are held during practices every Tuesday.

Delphine Howard, talking about NICE Centre activities, said that the annual general meeting was held April 25. The soup, sandwich, and dessert dinner, along with a bake sale and silent auction that was held on April 15 raised around $1,600. She thanked everyone who supported it and said that a speaker from Saskatchewan Seniors Association will be coming to the Centre to speak in June.

Speaking on behalf of town council Ken Newell said that council expressed its gratitude for all the funds which have been raised for the Communiplex upgrades and reminded individuals and groups who are considering specific fundraising projects or grant applications pertaining to any town infrastructure to provide information in advance to town council so that all parties may have the appropriate information and approval prior to activities being undertaken.

On behalf of the chamber of commerce, Nicole Korpusik said that although a few accounts still need to be settled, the annual trade show is reported to have been profitable.

An information meeting for current, new, and potential members of the chamber is being planned for next month.

The Norquay Horticulture Society was to hold a lunch on May 20, Delphine Howard said.

            The Ukrainian Dance spring concert held April 24 was very well attended, Lilia Livingstone said, thanking everyone for their support and a special acknowledgement to Fedoruk Seeds for a “generous donation of bags of potatoes and onions for the club to sell.”

Elected to the club executive committee on April 11 were: Jeannette Ebert, president; Shirley Nokinsky, vice-president; Kaeley Kish, secretary, and Marci Griffith, treasurer.

            Iris Nokinsky said that the health auxiliary’s plans and quotes for the next phase of the outdoor area of the Norquay Health Centre had been sent to the Sunrise Health Region for approval.

            “The health auxiliary is getting very close to achieving its goal for funding,” Nokinsky said. “Thank you to everyone who has supported its events.”

            The Norquay Legion held a barbecue at Bell Park on May 25 to raise money for students’ scholarships, Reagan Foster said.

            Speaking about the Tail Twisters 4-H Club, Ruth Demetrick said that a riding clinic with Tyler Darroch of Yorkton was held on April 30 at Naclia’s Riding Arena, and the archery project had its achievement day on April 28. Riding clinics were planned for May 14 with Sandy Assman and on June 4 with the instructor to be announced. The light horse achievement day will be held June 17 at Naclia’s Riding Arena.

            Regarding the Norquay Playschool, Nicole Korpusik said that on May 17 the class of four-year-old students was to go on a tour to engage in some activities at the Norquay Elementary School in preparation for Kindergarten.

            The Duck Mountain Ambulance came to visit the playschool and hopefully the fire department and the RCMP may also be scheduled to visit before the end of the year, Korpusik said. The graduation for the class of four-year-old students will be held May 31, which will be the last day of classes for the three-year-olds, while the four-year olds will have their final class on June 2.

Registration for the 2016-17 school year is now open for children born in 2012 and 2013, she said. All are welcome to register as long as they are potty-trained.

Regarding figure skating, Melissa Czornobay said that Kaeley Kish and Nicole Korpusik attended the AGM for Skate Canada in Regina at the end of April. The Skate Canada Draw was made but there were no local winners. A portion of the proceeds from all the tickets sold locally did come back to the local club.

Reagan Foster said that the Timberline Band Association’s intermediate/sophomore band was to go to Moose Jaw May 18 and 19, the beginners have begun going to Sturgis on Mondays, while the final band concert is to be held on June 1 at the Sturgis High School.

Delphine Howard said that the Active Aging Group has been able to meet a few more times over the past month due to the unfavourable weather, but has now officially concluded programming until the fall.

Minor ball teams have been formed for T-ball, rookie, mosquito and bantam teams. Practices and games are mainly Mondays and Wednesdays and the canteen will be open for games only. A Minor Ball Day was held on May 15.

The recreation board’s AGM will be held on June 13. There is at least one position of the executive to be filled because the two-year term for secretary has been completed and Lilia Livingstone has resigned the position effective June 30.
