Losing to Preeceville in the finals was a heartbreaker for the Canora Pee Cobras, but Coach Vern Schick said he proud of everyone one of them.
After defeating Wapella in the semi-finals, a team that had not lost this season, the Cobras showed they can play with the best in the league and win, said the coach.
Going into the final series with Game one to be played in Preeceville, the Cobras were flying high and even led 5-1 at one point in that game on March 15. However, Preeeville got a couple of quick goals and the momentum shifted. The game went into overtime when Preeceville scored the final goal to make it a 6-5 game.
When it came down to the final game in Canora on Thursday, the Cobras ran out of steam, said Schick. Preeceville proved to be a stronger team and took the championship title.
The Cobras had only eight peewee skaters and the rest are novice, said Schick. It was impossible to make three lines with so few players.
The peewees had a good season and were the strongest passing team in the league, he said. In the 25 games that the Cobras played this season, they lost six, four of those were to Preeceville.
