The Preeceville Harvard Air Cadets held an open house on October 11 when promoting the program was highlighted.

Prior to the open house, cadets from the program traveled to Preeceville, Sturgis and Norquay schools to make presentations featuring the program.

The open house portion was held at the Preeceville Community Legion Hall and featured activities surrounding cadet exercises. A survival scenario was set up to show what all is required to survive in the outdoors. New and potential cadets had the opportunity to try drill formations, shooting at a gun range, flying in a flight simulator and how to properly take care of a uniform and shoes.

A Powerpoint presentation played throughout the evening featured the cadets’ past activities.

"This year we have 34 cadets registered," said Capt. Troy Rogowski.

It is very exciting to see so many new cadets, Rogowski said. “We offer weekly drills combined with classroom time.”

The cadet program continues to offer marksmanship with the addition of a biathlon exercise.

The air cadet program is open to youths between 12 and 18 years and there is no registration fee.

“The purpose of cadets is to develop in youths the attributes of leadership and engage in active citizenship and physical fitness within an environment that stimulates an interest in the Canadian Forces,” a release said.

The cadets are funded by the Department of National Defence, the Air Cadet League (a civilian non-profit organization), Navy League and the Army League. The motto of the air cadets is “Learn to Serve and Advance,” said Rogowski.

Cadets are given the opportunity to travel, go to Camp Saskadet and do a variety of monthly activities. They also play a part in the community with their attendance and participation in the annual Remembrance Day Service.
