Jasmine Knihniski discovered a wonderful opportunity that will see her traveling overseas to Tanzania, Africa for a 20-day volunteer service program.
“I am excited to participate in a 20-day community service program in Tanzania this summer,” said Knihniski. “While in Tanzania I will be helping to build a school, teach children and help to make clean water more accessible for the community through an organization called Me to We.
“ I will also learning to speak Swahili, spending time with the Maasai warriors and exploring the safari.”
The Me to We mission is to operate programs around the world, which offer educational, service and leadership development and global citizenship, said information regarding the organization.Me to Weis a for-profit social enterprise, founded in 2008 by Canadian brothers Craig Kielburger and Marc Kielburger, that provides socially responsible products and services and donates half of its net profits to non-profit partner Free the Children.
“This program will give me the opportunity to experience another culture first-hand, to learn about the important issues in the other parts of the world and to become a more globally-aware person,” Knihniski said. “Due to the high cost of international travel, I am reaching out to the community to help sponsor me on this life-changing journey.”
Knihniski was encouraged and inspired by the book Alexander of Africa to reach out and volunteer in a Third World country. She will be leaving July 30 and traveling to Toronto to meet her group that will be participating in the journey.
“I am excited to meet new people and set out on this new adventure,” she said. “There is a lot of planning that needs to be done and I am required to bring numerous articles.
“The biggest fear I have is contracting a disease through mosquitoes. We have all been immunized and we will also have a medical staff traveling with us but there is still the possibility of contracting something.”
