Review prompted after Saskatoon police officer fires weapon

SASKATOON — A Saskatoon Police Service officer discharged a weapon over the weekend, prompting a review of the incident that caused an increased police presence in the area of Confederation Drive and Laurier Drive.

Police are investigating after an incident Sunday where a suspect pointed a firearm at police members, resulting in an officer discharging their service weapon.

According to SPS, shortly after 4 p.m., March 26, members of the SPS Guns and Gangs Unit observed a man known to have warrants get into a cab in the 3200 block of 33rd Street.

Police say when officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the suspect exited from the backseat of the vehicle and pointed a firearm in the direction of police officers. One member discharged their service weapon.

The suspect then fled on foot into the mall in the 300 block of Confederation Drive.

Further investigation has not located the suspect and police do not believe there is an immediate threat to public safety.

This incident will be reviewed in accordance to policy.
