Labour Day Long Weekend: the unofficial start to fall. And as we transition from vacation and lazy days to returning to the fall routine, we here at SGI want to impart some traffic safety tips for anyone heading out on Saskatchewan roads this long weekend maximizing that last bit of summer:
Saskatchewan highways will be busy with football fans flocking to Regina to watch the Blue Bombers get stepped on, so slow down, be patient, and give yourself plenty of time to get to where you’re going.
Never, ever drive impaired. We're not saying you can't enjoy yourself this weekend, just plan a safe ride beforehand.
Buckle up - you'd think we wouldn't have to tell people this anymore, but 500-plus seatbelt tickets issued every month say otherwise.
Obey posted limits - what's your rush? Getting there is half the fun.
Put the phone away and avoid distractions when you’re driving. Police in Saskatchewan have been catching record numbers of distracted drivers over the past few months. Don't be one of them.
Don’t drive sleepy – if you’re tired, pull over and take a nap. Not only is the safe thing to do, it’ll make for a more interesting story about your Labour Day long weekend!
Police will be out patrolling Saskatchewan roads looking for impaired drivers, distracted drivers, and speeders, so whether you're hanging with friends at the lake or watching the Riders triumph, be safe and responsible out there. Keep in mind that collision risk doubles on long weekends.
There are still many work zones active in the province, so remember to reduce your speed in the #OrangeZone, watch out for highway workers, and to check the Highway Hotline beforehand to plan your trip.
