On March 31, 2017, the students of Canora Composite School and Kamsack Comprehensive Institute were each provided with the opportunity to host a Mothers Against Drunk Driving Canada multi-media presentation entitled, In the Blink of an Eye, said Shawna Leson, former CCS Students Against Drunk Driving advisor.

The program was designed to communicate directly with young people on their level and in their language to encourage them to take a closer look at their values and perceptions, said Leson

In the Blink of an Eyeis the story of best friends forever, Gabby and Sarah. On Sarah’s birthday, the girls open a time capsule they had buried several years ago, laughing at the mementos that, even back then, pledged a forever friendship.

After Sarah’s parents go out the girls are joined by Sarah’s boyfriend, Dylan, and his buddy Asif.  The friends are having a great time before heading off to a party. Dylan is so anxious to get to the party that he decides not to wait for a cab but to drive. After all, it’s not that far.

The friends strongly object.  They’re not stupid enough to get into the car with a drunk and drug-fueled driver.  Asif decides he’ll walk Gabby home while Sarah, very upset, calls 9-1-1 to report Dylan driving impaired. So, Gabby, Asif and Sarah all do the right thing even if Dylan doesn’t. Yet in a tragic twist of fate, a forever friendship ends abruptly and many lives are ruined, in the blink of an eye.

More recently, on April 24, a follow-up speaker was arranged to readdress the student bodies and communicate with them about choices and leadership within their social circles and communities. International speaker, Sunjay Nath sharedhis perspective on making positive choices for a positive life.

Nath travels globally sharing insights on leadership and performance, said Leson. Through his creative and humorous presentation, he empowers students and challenges them to become pillars within their communities and to take on leadership roles where they are responsible for the decisions they make.

With the collaboration, sponsorship and support of various businesses and organizations, Nath enjoyed the engaged audiences at both CCS and KCI and commented on the well-behaved students of both communities of Canora and Kamsack, said Leson.

Leson acknowledges Kamsack SADD for itssupport and partnership in this event, Kamsack RCMP for their attendance, as well as thegenerous financial contributions from CCS SRC, Andrychuk’s Funeral Home in Kamsack, Leson’s Funeral Home in Canora, and the Canora Fire Department.
