Make sure to wear the proper gear when riding your bicycle during winter.

SASKATOON — The city will host Winter BYXE Feb. 13 to 20, with Bike to Workday among the activities and events lined up in co-ordination with the local advocacy group Saskatoon Cycles.

Saskatoon Cycles is a non-profit group that supports bicycles as a convenient and low-cost mode of transportation, decreasing vehicular traffic congestion, noise and air pollution.

Saskatoon Cycles is co-ordinating the events, including Bike to Workday Thursday, Feb. 16, where people are encouraged to use their bicycles since weather conditions next week are expected to be in the single digits.

Commuter stations, sponsored by local organizations and businesses, will serve refreshments and snacks for people on bikes during their morning (7 to 9 a.m.) and afternoon (4 to 6 p.m.) commutes.

Riding a bicycle is also good for physical and mental health as it is a regular exercise that makes you feel alert, energized and refreshed, according to Saskatoon Cycles.

Riding a bike while the weather is fine, despite still being in the winter season, also saves money proponents say.

Saskatoon’s Winter BYXE Week encourages residents to try riding a bike in winter. Brightly-coloured decorated bicycles have been placed around the city for adventurers to find. There is also a BYXE Week scavenger hunt.

For newbies or veteran winter cyclists who want a refresher, check out the gallery of Winter Cycling Tips.

Share your pedal adventures by taking photos along your ride and post them with #BYXE. The photos will be shared on Saskatoon Cycle pages and participants will be entered to win prizes.
