The main objective of the SSFA (Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association) 55-plus games is to promote active living, wellness and participation of adults 55 years of age and older. The games are first held at the district level and then at the provincial level, from which participants can qualify for the national games.

Preeceville hosted the trump whist games for the Parkland Valley Region of the Saskatchewan Senior Fitness 55-plus games on April 11 at the Club 60. There were 18 teams entered. The teams played a round-robin set of games, determining winners based on a points system.

The team of Betty Lou Skogen and Vera Melynchuk won gold. Silver went to the team of Avalon Hough and Steven Kardynal. Bronze went to the team of Ruth Zubko and Maryann Washburn. The top five teams advance to the provincial games in North Battleford on July 5-7.

“The main focus of the games is for seniors to get out have fun and keep physically and mentally active,” said Maxine Stinka of Canora.

District competitions are normally held every year while the provincial and national games are held every other year. Provincial games are scheduled to take place in North Battleford and the Canada 55 plus games will be hosted in Bramford.

The events held at the games must be approved by the SSFA board. Participants may compete in one event only at the 55-plus provincial games. The availability of facilitates in the host community does impact the selection of the events.
