The Yorkton Council took steps at its regular meeting Monday to undertake tax enforcement proceedings against the owners of a number of properties in the city.
The first was to authorize the advertisement of the attached Form A List of Lands in Arrears in the local newspaper on properties with taxes in arrears dating back to 2016, and prior where a tax lien does not currently exist.
“Following authorization, we will advertise the legal land description and arrears owing in the local newspaper. If arrears are not paid by January 15, 2018, a tax lien will be registered on the property,” explained Shannon Bell, Director of Finance with the City.
Bell said the effort is not the first regarding the properties.
“In October 2017, a total of 182 letters were sent out advising property owners that if their arrears were not paid by October 10, 2017, their property would be advertised in the local newspaper. As of the date of this report there are still 77 properties that are still unpaid and therefore will be advertised in the local newspaper,” she told Council.
In addition, in accordance with Section 22 (1) of The Tax Enforcement Act, the City of Yorkton can proceed with the next step in tax enforcement proceedings once the tax lien has been registered on title for at least six months, said Bell.
In a second motion Council approved authorization to proceed with the “Six Month Notice” to the following property owners.
