The Canora Composite School Social Justice Group organized fundraisers in order to donate to Kenya through Kelsey Chupa, a student who will be travelling to Kenya through the Free the Children program. Perfect timing between the formation of the Canora Composite School Social Justice Group and the announcement that one of their members, Kelsey Chupa, would be volunteering in Kenya over the summer, allowed for members of the club to put the proceeds of their fundraising towards the cause.

The CCS Social Justice Group was formed earlier this year in order to raise awareness of social justice issues around the world. One of their members, Chupa, was chosen to take part in a volunteer experience with the Free the Children program in Kenya after WE Day in Saskatoon on March 2, so the club decided to raise money for the cost of Chupa’s Kenya experience.

The CCS Social Justice Group put together several fundraisers, including bake sales, and through the sale of necklaces called Rafikis, handmade by mothers in Kenya, where 50 per cent of proceeds go directly to the artisans. The Cougar Assistance Room also made a donation from the funds gathered from their own events.

The $300 the group gathered was given to Chupa in the form of a cheque, along with a letter of recognition from the CCS Social Justice Group, on June 27. The students that are part of the group wish for Kelsey to have an amazing time impacting the lives of people in Kenya.
