Sturgis Sports and Rodeo provides action-packed weekend

The Sturgis sports grounds were alive with action when eager fans took to the grounds for the Sports and Rodeo weekend on June 22 and 23. The weekend kicked off with a pancake breakfast at the Sturgis READ Club.

The Etomaimie Riders Club hosted gymkhana events on both days with several participants.

An outdoor trade show featured different vendors displaying their products. Vendors over the two days included:  Barry Wasylenchuk, B R Honey; Anna Thickson, Granny’s Soaps; Pam Schmuck, Scentsy; Meagen Strauss, Alchemist’s Circle Gifts; Triple H Homestead; Louise Fedirko, Voxx; Vern Peterson, Bamboo sheets and Violet Gibb, beadwork.

The Ranch Rodeo showcased the many talents and skills of its cowboys entered in the program. It concluded with a fun sheep riding event for all local children.

The entertainment scheduled for the mini outdoor stage on Saturday was moved to the beer gardens due to wet conditions and featured Tony Genoway, Cassandra Danyluk, Les Terry, Laura Marie Lomenda, Stewart Brazeau, Sherry Lesser, Tom Hazlet and concluded with Lawrence Brass, known as BrownCanShine band accompanied by Duane and Tyler Brass.

A steak supper and fireworks concluded Saturday events.

Saturday also played host to the second annual Ivar Brass Memorial co-ed slo-pitch ball tournament.

A pancake breakfast at the Sturgis sports grounds kicked off events on Sunday, which featured a Christian cowboy service.

A car, truck and tractor show and shine featured 30 entries with awards for vehicles entered in 1940, 1950, 1960, 1970 and 1980 categories along with best truck and tractor categories.

The chuckwagon and chariot races were among the highlights of the weekend. There were 41 chariots racers and 29 chuckwagon entries. The Eastern Professional Chariot and Chuckwagon Association hosted the event.

The top three chariot racers over the two days of racing were: Twyla Salmond, Colin Kilburn and Colt Peterson.

The top three chuckwagon racers over the two days of racing were: Casey Peterson, Larry Salmond and Curtis Longman.
