Tabulation machines OKed

Yorkton Council unanimously passed a bylaw at its regular meeting Monday to allow for automated vote tabulating equipment in this fall’s municipal election.

Yorkton Council unanimously passed a bylaw at its regular meeting Monday to allow for automated vote tabulating equipment in this fall’s municipal election.

“In accordance with Section 90 of The Local Government Election Act, 2015, the council may, by bylaw, provide for the use at elections of voting machines, voting recorders, optical scanning vote tabulators or other similar devices,” explained, Kathy Ritchie Director of Legislation & Procedures (City Clerk) to Council.

“The City has in the past, and arrangements have been made, to use Automated Vote Tabulating Equipment. Recent changes made to The Local Government Election Act, 2015, and The Local Government Election Regulations, 2015, respecting the use of Voting Machines has required that this City of Yorkton Bylaw be rewritten to ensure incorporation of those changes.

“As required by the Act, the proposed Bylaw sets out the provisions respecting the form of ballot, which was established by Council resolution at the June 13th, 2016 regular meeting of council – that the arrangement of names on the 2016 Municipal Election Ballots be in alphabetical order of the candidates surname, and also establishes the provisions respecting procedures for voting and for the counting of votes.”
