STURGIS — The Gateway Co-op’s new grocery store in Sturgis is finally showing real progress. The foundation work is now complete, along with all structural walls and roof sheeting, with tinning the roof listed among the last exterior steps. Refurbished elevator lumber was used on both the exterior and interior.
“Insulation and concrete work is done, floors are all poured in the entire building, plumbing features have been cut into the floors. It went up pretty quickly, and right now, what the public doesn’t see is all the interior work going on. Landscaping with asphalt being poured and windows, doors and interior walls are still being addressed,” said Brad Chambers, Gateway Co-op CEO.
“The project is coming along on time as suspected with hopefully setting up shelves in mid-October, with a turnover in three weeks from then. We are looking at a two or three-day disturbance when we move over from the old store. Expanding hours is a possibility.
“The new store doubles the size of the old store and will feature a full bakery, meat-cutting department, on-site liquor sales and doubles the size of the freezers and coolers,” he added.
