SASKATOON – It was a difficult day Thursday for Taya Sinclair’s family as they attended the first court appearance of her accused killer.
Stephanie Halkett-Stevenson, 25, of Prince Albert made her first appearance in Saskatoon Provincial Court Thursday on a charge of first-degree murder in 24-year-old Sinclair’s death.
“Today was a hard day, but we did it,” Shyannah Sinclair posted on social media. “Our family did it. The first court hearing for my cousin Taya.
“We have so much love and support from so many people all over,” she added. “It is much appreciated and all the support does not go unnoticed.”
Prince Albert Police say that on Jan. 3. members from their Criminal Investigation Division arrested Halkett-Stevenson. She was arrested while in custody on unrelated matters on charges of aggravated assault, unlawful confinement and uttering threats involving a second victim.
Sinclair was found deceased on March 15, 2022, in an area south of the Alfred Jenkins Field House in Prince Albert. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support her two young boys. So far, $3,725 has been raised towards the $15,000 goal.
"Taya, a MMIW, was taken from her family in a tragic and horrific way," reads the GoFundMe page. "She still had so much to give and live for. Her children will need so much support and guidance as we move forward. If you are able to donate and help in any way, we would appreciate it. We appreciate the love and support we have been given thus far."
Halkett-Stevenson remains in custody and is back in Saskatoon court on Feb. 2.
