The CN EcoConnexions From the Ground Up tree planting ceremony took place at the Chase Kraynick Splash Park on July 17, during Canora in Bloom.
With the aid of financial support provided by a federal grant through EcoConnexions From the Ground Up and CN Rail, Canora was able to plant 300 trees and shrubs at several locations, said Jim Feeney, CN pensioners’ association rep. In addition to the Splash Park, shrubs and trees were also planted at the Canora Cemetary and the Canora Sports Grounds.
Eco Connexions From the Ground Upprovides funding for the greening of qualifying municipal properties across Canada, especially in communities where CN operates. Its partners Tree Canada and Communities in Bloom help Canadian municipalities establish tree plantings in a sustainable, environmentally responsible manner.
Tree Canada was represented at the ceremony by Kelvin Kelly, Saskatchewan community advisor. As part of the Canada 150 celebration, he said the group is involved in 150 tree plantings in various communities across the country, including Canora.
As Canora residents watch these trees and shrubs grow in the coming years, Kelly encourages them to consider the different ways they benefit the community.
“Trees provide shade from the sun in summer, protection from the wind and snow in winter. They help the environment by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air and releasing oxygen,” he said. “They also add value to your community with their natural beauty.”
