YORKTON - Recently the province released building permit numbers for November 2021 in Saskatchewan.

Building permits for the month were valued at $191 million, placing the province second overall in terms of percentage change for both month-over-month, and year-over-year.

Saskatchewan building permits jumped by 57.0 per cent (seasonally-adjusted) from November 2020 to November 2021 and increased by 49.5 per cent (seasonally-adjusted) from October 2021 to November 2021. The national month-over-month increase was 6.8 per cent.

"The strong growth in Saskatchewan's building permits in November shows renewed confidence in our economic recovery," Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison said in the release. "Over the past year we have seen significant investments into Saskatchewan and the increase in both residential and non-residential building permits further demonstrates we are building a strong Saskatchewan."

Locally, Michael Eger, Director of Planning, Building & Development with the City of Yorkton noted numbers month-to-month in the city can vary greatly.

As an example, in November 2021 there was only $80,000 in permitted construction value, while in November 2020 it was $675,000.

The year-to-year numbers are more favourable in Yorkton, noted Eger.

Total building permits issued in 2021 was 105, compared to only 76 in 2020.

The total construction value of the permits issued in 2021 was $27,128,754, compared to $19,023,760 in 2020.

New residential construction was limited in Yorkton through both 2020, and 2021.

Residential construction value (including only two new dwellings), in 2021 was $946,714, compared to $1,228,835 in 2020, which also included only two new dwellings.
