YORKTON - Yorkton City Council has voted to relieve Lonnie Kaal of her responsibilities as City Manager.

The decision was made Thursday at a Special Meeting of Council, where the decision was made in-camera.

In a release sent out by the city Friday, Mayor Mitch Hippsley stated Council felt a change in leadership at this level was required at this time.

Hippsley also noted he is confident that Council can be united in the selection of the next City Manager for the future of Yorkton.

There was no indication in the release whether the decision was unanimous by Council, the cost of the decision in terms of severance package and other anticipated costs, nor when a new City Manager would be expected to be hired.

At the Special Meeting, City Council subsequently appointed Michael Eger as interim City Manager until the position is filled in permanence.

The Mayor did state in the release; “I am very grateful for all Ms. Kaal’s guidance, vision and commitment to the City of Yorkton both in the Finance Department and as City Manager for the 30 years she has served collectively. I sincerely wish her a healthy and successful future in all she endeavours to do.”

As this is a personnel matter, no further comment will be provided, concluded the release.
