Dana Carlson of the Sturgis/Crystal Lake region is a budding artist who is making waves in the art industry.

Her unique twist on old and new techniques has created art pieces that are gaining her popularity.

Carlson grew-up near Sturgis and has always loved sketching.

“I can’t remember a time that I didn’t have my sketchbook with me,” said Carlson.

“It was always a pastime for me but in the past four years, I have really felt the need to focus my interest back into my art.

“I love creating high contrast and eye-catching artwork on paper and wood, with various subjects: Canadian wildlife, boho (abstract, geometric on wood)and natural designs of the unique and unexpected. My artwork is created in my home studio, alongside nurturing and supporting my family. My husband has been a huge support with looking after our two young children while I draw.

“Graphite pencil drawing and pyrography are my favourite mediums, but I enjoy experimenting with acrylic, oil, dry-brush painting and even pastels. I also frame and mat my own art work,” said Carlson.

Woodburning is something new to Carlson and she has enjoyed eperimenting with the different styles and techniques. She has created unique patterns on cutting boards and wooden spoons using a special woodburning tool.

To date, Carlson has sold many pieces online through Etsy shop and Dana Rae Creations.

Her creations are all hand drawn with a speciality in nature and animal drawings.

"Every drawing I do has a story to tell. I feel that the eyes on each one tell their own story that adds to the drawing," she said.

Carlson has expanded from drawings to painting and wood burning.

“As my kids get older I want to spend more of my time dedicated to my art,” she stated.
