Youngsters have fun while learning about fire fighting at Kids Korner Youth Centre

Kids Korner hosted a junior firefighter challenge course on July 19, which was open to children aged three to 15. The Canora in Bloom event was co-sponsored by Kids Korner and the Canora fire department.

Kids Korner hosted a junior firefighter challenge course on July 19, which was open to children aged three to 15.

The Canora in Bloom event was co-sponsored by Kids Korner and the Canora fire department. Eric Sweeney, deputy Canora fire chief, said the event gave children the opportunity to experience some of the same things that fire fighters see in their daily work.

The course included such challenges as carrying a fire hose, dragging a fire hose with a rope, running along a ladder stretched out on the ground without tripping, swinging a sledge hammer, climbing a ladder, crawling through a tunnel and spraying a building using a fire hose.

Sweeney said not only does the course give the children a taste of what it’s like to be a fire fighter, it also gives them some valuable exercise and reduces the time they spend playing with their electronic gadgets.

A total of 25 junior firefighters went through the challenge course, including Karleigh Lambert, Lucas Bushell, Archer Saunders, Owen Van Brugge, Calleigh Van Brugge, Hudson Matychuk, Quinn Bedore, Knox Oswald, Kruze Oswald, Liam Trask, Tia Bushell, Methyl Trask, Latifah Severight, Chloe Doogan, Caden Doogan, Katherine Faryna, Isaiah Faryna, Willow Smith, Arista Wyonzek, Acelyn Wyonzek, Mason Reine, Gaspar Thomas, Aubrie Monette, Maddix Sawka and Erika Sweeney.

The children all received certificates for completing the course.

Kids Korner hosted a number of other events during Canora in Bloom, said Tricia Bedore of Kids Korner.

Outdoor art on July 17 involved the decoration of a maple leaf to display for the Canada 150 Outdoor Family Festival. After the maple leaf was completed the children used water guns loaded with paint to create a giant Canada 150 canvas, which will be displayed at Kids Corner.

The family selfie scavenger hunt was held on July 18. Participating teams were given an envelope with instructions and photos as a guide of selfies they were required to take of their group throughout Canora. This was an “in motion” event and the only wheels allowed for participants were on wagons and strollers.

Old fashioned carnival games were the focus on July 20. Children played classic games such as Ring Toss, Lucky Duck Pond, Fish Bowl, Lollipop Tree and more. The carnival style concession included fresh cotton candy, candy, chocolate dipped maple marshmallows on a stick and more.

The planned event for July 21 was an outdoor dance for youth, but unfortunately severe thunderstorms forced the postponement of the event, Bedore said.

The Canada 150 Outdoor Family Festival took place on July 22. At Kids Korner there were three bouncers and free Canada tattoos for everyone.
