The 2017 Provincial 4-H Curling Championships were held in Yorkton from Feb. 11-12. There were 18 teams split between a senior age bracket and a junior age bracket, with curlers from all over Saskatchewan.
In the senior division, first place went to a combined team from the Herd of Thunder 4-H Club/Sandy Hills 4-H Horse Club. The team consisted of Emily Zunti (lead), Taylor Gardner (second), Chantelle MacLeod (third), Kody Farrow (skip), Taylor Farrow (spare) and coaches Cory Walton and Mark MacLeod.
Second place in the senior division went to a combined team from the Lashburn 4-H Beef Club/Maidstone Gully Multiple 4-H Club. The team consisted of Faith Chibri (lead), Chase Kerr (second), Savannah Carson (third), Doug Sroka (skip), Jocelyn Seguin and coach Louise Sroka.
In the junior division, first place went to the host team, Hilltop 4-H Club. The team is made up of Connor Bauer (lead), Emily Yanish (second), Hudson Chesney (third), Hunter Chesney (skip), Kolton Yewsuck (spare) and coach Corey Chesney.
Second place in the junior division went to Wild Rose 4-H Beef Club. The team includes Owen Beaulac (lead), Shelby Woytiuk (second), Isaiah Fox (third), Olivia Woytiuk (skip) and coach Brena Beaulac.
Lois Trowell is the president of the district 12 4-H conference. She said there were a lot of good shots made over the weekend.
“In those final games, both Hilltop (club) and the Herds of Thunder (and Sandy Hills combined team) were down halfway through their game. Both went through the weekend undefeated,” she said. “There were some really good, close games.”
Trowell also said it was a packed house at the Yorkton Curling Club all weekend.
“There were 18 teams from across the province, and 240 people at the banquet. There were a lot of parents, spectators and relatives who came from all over,” she said.
The provincial championship was the highest destination for 4-H curlers in the province, as there is no national championship.
