With warm weather comes a variety of sport options for people in the Yorkton area. For those who are interested in tennis, Sask Tennis certified coach Alexa Trischuk is offering a variety of clinics and camps for players of all levels and ages.

For the kids, there are summer camps running for the entire month of July. And for the adults, Trischuk is offering two clinics: a stroke clinic and a cardio clinic.

The summer is just starting, and Trischuk said they’ve been struggling with registration so far.

Trischuk is an experienced tennis player and instructor. She’s been playing for almost 25 years. She’s attended several Canadian national competitions, western Canada games, Canada Summer Games, and she received a scholarship to play college tennis. After deciding she wasn’t ready to go at that point, she continued playing competitive tennis and teaching for the past 15 years.

This is her third summer in Yorkton, offering her knowledge and experience to anyone who wants to learn.

She emphasized that her clinics and camps are for players from beginner levels to advanced.

The stroke clinics, according to Trischuk, represent a tennis lesson. They’re offered on Monday evenings from 6-7 p.m.

“They’re for beginner to intermediate players. We work on form and some technique,” said Trischuk. “Every day, we offer a different stroke in tennis.”

She said the right now, they usually only see five to eight people participating, so there’s a lot of one-on-one instruction.

On Mondays, Trischuk said they cover drills and instruction, and on Wednesday they’ll take what they’ve learned and turn it in to point and match play.

“It’s like a tennis lesson with lots of instructions, and lots of opportunity for people to ask questions,” Trischuk said.

On Mondays from 7-8 p.m., Trischuk offers cardio clinics.

She explained it as an hour workout where you really work up a sweat.

“We’re not worried about your tennis ability, form, technique, or anything like that,” she said.

A lot of the exercises are done holding a tennis racket, and they also use a variety of fitness equipment. To make things even more fun, the music is blasting the whole time.

“You’re constantly moving, it’s a fantastic sweat and it’s a lot more fun than running at the gym,” she added.

For the kids, Trischuk has summer camps. They’re opened for kids from ages five until about 16.

“It really allows kids the opportunity to learn the sport,” said Trischuk. “From what I’ve been told, tennis is fairly new to Yorkton. We want as many kids as possible to be aware of the program.”

The camps involve instruction, fitness elements, games and mini tournaments on the last day.

There are still plenty of spots open for most weeks of the summer camps. For more information contact Alexa at 204-510-8019.
