About 16 students turned out Dec. 19 for the 4th Annual Yorkton Regional High School Big Buck horn measuring day.

"There's lots of kids that hunt at our school," says organizer Darren Wandy, who along with physical education teacher and student activity advisor Roby Sharpe gathered with the students that entered the contest.

"The kids pay $10 to enter the contest," adds Wandy.

"It's a chance to show off what they've done over the hunting season."

Wandy said they also try and promote safe hunting.

The event, termed 'unique' by both staff members, Sharpe and Wandy, has grown over the past couple of years.

"Usually about a dozen kids (take part)," says Wandy.

He added that some of them are into it more than others.

"We knew it would take a couple of years for it (to pick up in popularity)."

"It's a cool, unique contest," Sharpe added.

The scoring for the contest is conducted by the Wildlife Federation.

"It's been very popular," he said, adding that the support from local businesses has been helpful.

Both staff members also suggested that the Yorkton Regional High School may be the only school around that offers a horn measuring contest for young, local hunters.

"It is unique," says Wandy.

The contest this year drew 16 entries.

Sharpe said the competition is mainly for deer, but there were other entries as well, including one student, who shot a moose with three bullets.

Sean Zielinski, who is originally from Canora was out hunting one day just outside his hometown when he and his dad came across three moose at the start of draw season.

He described the situation.

"I saw two other moosethis one was laying down. It stood up and I shot him in the right horn."

Zielinski said it took two more shots before the animal went down.

Final measuring at the YRHS Big Buck was 53 greatest spread.
