The Yorkton Blitz 16 and Under volleyball team did fairly well over the weekend.

Going into the tournament, Bryce Krawetz, coach of the host team in the weekend's tournament, said he had high hopes for his girls.

They wound up placing in the top four teams in the 2012 16 & Under Women's Saskatchewan Volleyball Association SASK Cup 2 tournament.

Holding 25 teams from both Saskatchewan and Manitoba, the City needed six different courts and two separate locations to house all of the games.

Teams were divided into six pools and included Krawetz's Blitz and the McSweeney Selects.

"All the girls" played well, said Krawetz after the Blitz made it to the bronze medal game against the Moose Jaw Panthers.

The Blitz lost in straight sets but on the upside they are looking good in their contention for the volleyball provincials. Krawetz said in their last tournament, they placed in sixth. This weekend on home court, they improved two spots to fourth.

According to him, it was a team effort.

"There's none that I can single out."

Their biggest test came in the semi finals which saw them play the QCVC Regina Royals.

"They were very hard hitting."

The tournament also saw them beat Prince Albert in straight sets. They took QCVC to the maximum three sets before bowing out in straight sets to Moose Jaw.

"We played well but came up short.

He reports there's two more competitions coming up for his team, among them is in the middle of next month and the final weekend of April is provincials.

"These Asics Cups are used to seed for provincials," he said.

Krawetz also pointed out that things seem to be in their favour in terms of their game play throughout the weekend.

"Everything actually."

Specifically, their hard work and never-give-up attitude, he concluded, referring to their chemistry together as a "well oiled machine".

He also noted that the goal for the weekend was accomplished with their top four finish in Tier I play.

Regina gave them their biggest test, he said.
