The Sacred Heart Girls soccer team captured a bronze medal in the 2A girls soccer provincials held in Regina on the weekend.
In the first game, the Saints were up against Vanier the number one Moose Jaw team.
The game was a well-played game by both teams. Sacred Heart won the game 4-2.
Rita Fetsch scored all four goals for the Saints. Shayla Merriam played the set up player for two of these goals and had a strong game in the midfield.
This win advanced the team to the provincial semi-final against the number-one girls' team in the province, Saskatoon Bishop Mahoney, explains Jeanne Fetsch, SHHS coach.
"Bishop were the Saskatoon city champs defeating the 3A champion Saskatoon St. Joseph in the Saskatoon city finals and were crowned the 2A girls champion in this tournament."
Apparently, that wasn't enough to completely deter the SHHS club.
"Sacred Heart played their best game of the year but came up on the losing end of a 2-0 score. Every player on the Saints team showed up to play in this game but couldn't match the skill and finesse of the Bishop Mahoney team," Fetsch went on to explain.
Jenna Sahulka and Leta Perepeluk impressed, she said, with some excellent play making and strong defence. Rita Fetsch and Kristen Jonassen carried the team in this one as the two Gr. 10 girls played their hearts out and set the tone for the remainder of the team.
Their strong play continued into the bronze medal final against North Battleford John Paul.
Fetsch scored twice and set up Jonassen for a beautiful strike. Jonassen also set up one of Fetsch's goals which hit the top corner and gave no chance for the Battleford keeper to stop.
Kaylee Ford and Kaitlin Inglis showed their fortitude both playing on injuries to play well for the Saints.
Saints defenders led by Gr. 12s Samantha Okrainec and Meagan Yagelniski were solid and supported their keeper Raquel Hackman who earned her seventh shutout of the season. Madisson Shearer and Connor Rosluk both had strong defensive games and Allison Kruger came on strong to play well in this game.
The Saints ended their season with an overall record of 13-6 losses.
"The only 2A School to defeat the Saints was the champion Bishop Mahoney," says coach Fetsch.
"They outscored their opposition 81-25 in these 19 games."
Rita Fetsch accounted for 45 of these goals and assisted on 13 others. Kaylee Ford also had a strong season recording 14 goals and seven assists. Jonassen recorded eight goals and seven assists and was a solid defender all season.
Coach Fetsch told the paper the Saints will bid farewell to seven Gr. 12s: Raquel Hackman, Emily Kruger, Samantha Okrainec, Leta Perepeluk, Hailey Richards, Jenna Sahulka, and Meagan Yagelniski. The team will miss the strong midfield play of Sahulka, Richards and Emily Kruger, Hackman's intensity, the consistent defending of Yagelniski, and the leadership provided by Perepeluk and Okrainec.
"The Lady Saints demonstrated excellent attitude and sportsmanship throughout the entire season," Fetsch closed.
