The lacrosse Bulldogs pulled off with their first win of the season Sunday afternoon at Yorkton Kinsmen Arena.
They played two games in Prairie Gold Lacrosse League (PGLL) action over the weekend.
They played the night before in Estevan and came away empty, losing 14-7.
On Sunday they held on for a 8-7 win.
In both games, they did something they haven't done yet this season, says head coach Joe Choptuik.
They had scored the opening goal.
At Estevan, they opened up a 2-0 lead before going on to lose.
At home on Sunday, the scoring went back and forth in three's. They opened up a 3-0 lead. Then visiting Saskatoon Steelers scored three in the second period to tie it up.
Yorkton regained a three goal lead, scoring three more to take a 6-3 lead and then never looked back.
"We wanted the ball more," insists Choptuik, adding that whenever the team can get that win, he's happy with the effort.
Despite strong efforts from a handful of their top forwards, Choptuik said there is still work to be done if they want to make the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League playoffs.
Justin Genaille scored seven points, four goals and three assists.
Event though the lacrosse season is only four games old for the Bulldogs, the season only lasts a couple of months.
Yorkton got another multi-goal effort from sharpshooter Genaille and another gutsy performance from Tyson Haas, one of the shortest players on the team but will go after anybody on the opposition when need be. Haas also opened the scoring after getting run over in front of the Steelers' goal.
"He's a hustler," suggests Choptuik, who says he doesn't mind the overly physical play.
One of those near-bouts, came against 215lb, 6'3" Brad Schnitzler.
Schnitzler also had a goal in the Steelers' comeback attempt and had gotten his team on the scoreboard late in the first period.
Haas, whose official size isn't listed on the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League web page, is not the biggest kid on the floor but he sure plays like it sometimes.
He went up against a 210lb player on Saskatoon however nobody, including his bench wanted him to drop his gloves and go at it.
Later in the game he levelled a Saskatoon attacker with a near-perfect hip check in the offensive zone that may have led to a turnover.
Choptuik said he likes to see the physical play as long as Haas isn't the one to instigate.
"Yeah, as long as he doesn't instigate."
Zach Soke tallied twice in the win.
Yorkton's PGLL standings haven't been updated as of press time but the team will go into its third weekend of play with a 1-3 record.
Choptuik said that next up will be a road date with the Moose Jaw Warriors on June 2 (Saturday) and a second road match June 3 in Regina against the Regina Riot.
"They'll both be tough," insists Choptuik.
