Of approximately 41 players in the Training to Train Year One provincial soccer team, three Yorkton United players were identified to return for the winter/spring training events.

Derek Campbell, Nathan Cochrane and Spencer Steele as well as Kendra Varjassy, who was identified as well, in the Provincial Teams Program-Training to Train Year Two U14 female division.

Part of the training for all four soccer players includes three separate sets of training weekends.

They included Feb. 11-12 and March 17-18, both at the Moose Jaw field house and April 21-22 at the SaskTel Soccer Centre.

There are two dates scheduled for the summer, including the University of Regina campus and the Prairie Invitational competition in Winnipeg. Campbell, who was among the handful of Yorkton United soccer players who took advantage of some gym time during a recent futsal men's tournament, just turned 13 years old.

He plays midfield and has developed a reputation as a high-energy, attacking playmaker.

Originally from Saltcoats, Campbell told the paper that he went for tryouts in December and "got picked".

He is trying out for the Team Sask U13 club and was happy to report he made the fist cut.

"He just needs to make the second cut," notes former coach and Yorkton United soccer player Mike Jakubiec.

The team roster was at 28 in late January and Jakubiec said it needs to be cut down to 20.

"He is a talented attacking midfield who seems to have endless energy when he plays," adds Jakubiec.

Campbell is confident too.

"I like setting up plays."

He said he is ready for the amount of travelling that he is going to have to put into getting to the various camps, admitting he's both "nervous" and excited".

He noted that he "hopes to stay in soccer for as long as possible".
