Canora Composite School senior boys volleyball team finishes season with home conference

Canora Composite School’s senior boys volleyball team finished the first year as a new team with a home conference to further hone its skills.

Canora Composite School’s senior boys volleyball team finished the first year as a new team with a home conference to further hone its skills.

According to Katherine LeBlanc, the coach of the team, the boys played very well during the conference on November 12 even though they did not qualify to move on to regional competitions.

“These young men showed great improvement over the (four) games and are looking forward to what the future holds for them in the 2017 season,” LeBlanc said.

Three other teams from Langenburg Central School, Kamsack Comprehensive Institute and Wadena Composite School attended the conference. The Canora senior Cougars finished in fourth place, behind Langenburg in first, Wadena in second and Kamsack in third.

Members who made up the senior boys volleyball team were Derek Barteski, Nathan Buscis, Ryan Edwards, Gabe Howell, Tyler Kopeck, Bryce Pelechaty, Brett Popoff, Logan Statchuk, Graeme Wilgosh and Vaughn Wilgosh. Amber Weinbender was the assistant coach, and LeBlanc said she’d like to thank her for her dedication to the team.

“We began our season as a trial. We wanted a senior boys volleyball team, but since there hadn’t been one in years, it was a slow start and a steep learning curve. As the season wore on, the boys got stronger and truly embraced the rotations and the strategy.

“As a coach, I am very proud of them and the growth they experienced. This is a fine group of young men,” LeBlanc said, adding that she enjoyed coaching them and is looking forward to the coming years for the team.
