The Canora Composite School’s senior girls volleyball team has been having a strong season in preparation for its home tournament, which will be held on October 28 and 29.

The coach, Colin Knight, said that the girls participated in three tournaments over the volleyball season which proved the team’s strengths.

Early in the season, the girls played a tournament in Creighton. Knight considers that a team-building exercise, and said it allowed the girls, who are in different grades, “to come together as a cohesive force.”

On September 16 and 17, the girls played at the Yorkton Regional High School for the ‘10’s Tournament.’ The girls beat Porcupine Plain in a round robin and played an excellent match in the quarter-finals against Lemburg.

“Playing shed light on the Canora Cougars’ ability to adapt to alternative defensive and offensive systems,” Knight said.

The Kamsack Comprehensive Institute’s tournament was held on October 14 and 15 and the team was awarded first place in its pool. The girls showed that even without their starting setters, who were not able to attend, the team has what it takes to compete, Knight said, commending both the new setters for this year, Jill Gulka and Felicity Mydonick, as well as the replacement setters for the game, who were Carmen Stusek and Janayah Merriam.

“They filled the setting positions with ease which created more possibilities for our tactical offense.”

Stusek is also the team’s captain, and Knight considers her a major component of the team for her ability to play any position and remain calm under pressure.

“The Canora Cougars senior girls volleyball team has the physical aptitude to play smart, powerful volleyball, and members have grown in their ability to practice a mentally disciplined game,” Knight said.

The girls were set to play a tournament in Regina over the weekend, and are preparing for the home tournament. Knight encourages people to come out and enjoy the games. Two baskets of goodies, one with a Halloween theme and one with a sports theme, will be raffled, with proceeds from that and the canteen going towards the purchase of equipment for the Canora Composite School’s volleyball program.
