Canora Supers bring impressive season to a close

The Canora Supers wrapped up this year’s regular baseball season on June 20, after having continued their winning streak from earlier in the season and closed with nine of their 14 games won.

The Supers rolled into June with an impressive record of five wins and two losses while riding a five-game winning streak, Greg Andreychuk, the player coach, said in a release. The streak continued up to seven games with an 8-0 victory in Yorkton over the Parkland Padres on June 2, and an 11-5 win over the Langenburg Indians on June 6.

Jordan Bieber threw five innings vs. the Padres, while striking out nine to pick up the win. Andreychuk was impressed with the solid defense and lively batters.

Against Langenburg, the team’s three power hitters, Kody Rock, Phil Sobkow, and Travis Mentanko, each hit a home run and had at least three runs batted in. Darcy Blommaert tossed six solid innings to pick up the win on the mound.

Unfortunately, on June 8 the winning streak ended at seven games at the hands of the Willowbrook Royals, as Tanner Nesbitt limited the Supers to just a handful of hits in a 4-1 loss. Jordan Bieber pitched well in defeat, making runs hard to come by for the winning team.

Andrychuk said they were then visited in Canora by the perennial powerhouses Yorkton Yankees on June 10. Fielders had to struggle with wind blowing towards left field, but the Supers still scored in every inning of the game, highlighted by homeruns from Tom Cook, Greg Andreychuk, and Logan Parachoniak. With a 14-7 lead going into the seventh inning, the lead seemed safe. But after some timely hitting by the Yankees, the score was suddenly 14-11 with the bases loaded. Fortunately, Colby Parachoniak was able to record the final out and the Supers were able to pull off the win.

On June 13, seven Super team members, along with Yorkton Oriole callups Ron Sopko and Clint Prier, made the trek to Russell for another tough game. After a see-saw affair, the Russell Bulls put up three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on for an 8-4 win. Andreychuk said Scott Sharp, who made his first pitching start of the season, pitched well, and Prier led the way offensively with a single and a double, but the defence had an off night, so the opposing team got in some extra runs.

The following evening, the Supers faced the Yorkton Orioles in Yorkton. This game featured a 16 player batting order for the Supers. 10 Supers hits led to nine runs, which earned them a 9-5 victory. Darcy Blommaert made the winning run, while Derek Palagian got the save on the mound. Andreychuk said the highlight of the game was Supers member Rawlee Wyatt sending a solid single to center field off of his dad Chris Wyatt. Bragging rights go to the junior member of the Wyatt family.

The season finale was June 20 in Roblin. It was another tough see-saw of a game with the Supers ahead 7-5 going into the bottom of the seventh. Unfortunately, a couple hits and a wild pitch allowed Roblin to push the score to 7-7. Chris Newans had a single, double, and a home run to lead the Supers offensively. Scott Sharp had two sharply hit doubles while Adam Korb had two singles.

The regular season ended with a record of nine wins, four losses, and one tie. Playoffs do not start until the second week of July, so the Supers are planning to play a few exhibition games to stay sharp. One of those exhibition games took place on June 24 vs the Rawtec Ramblers midget team of Yorkton.
