The Cardinals hosted Melville Saturday evening in Yorkton and lost by a close 2-1 final.

The Yorkton Cardinals had a season opening win in the Western Major Baseball League, but have lost their last three going back to Saturday.

The win came on the road Friday at Pirie Field in Melville.

Bryce Manning had the win for the Cardinals based on two innings of relief, pitching the fifth and sixth innings where he had one hit and allowed no hits.

Corey Thompson had the save tossing the final two innings for the Cardinals, giving up one earned run on two hits.

Melville enjoyed a 2-1 lead after the first inning, and added single runs in the second and the teams traded third inning runs to make it 4-2.

A three run sixth for Yorkton gave the Cardinals the lead, and they added two in the ninth, before the home team responded with a single run making it a 7-5 victory for the visitors.

Mike Perry had a home run for Yorkton, and Brayon Colley had a pair of steals to lead the Cardinal offence.

Saturday the Cardinals hosted Regina in their home opener at Jubilee Park.

Regina scored a single in the first, holding the one-run lead until the seventh when Yorkton knotted the score.

The Red Sox would get a 2-1 win scoring an unanswered run in the ninth.

Michael McCue was tagged with the loss based on giving up the winning run in three innings of work. McCue gave up two hits, and the one earned run in relief of starter Max Chadsey.

Sunday the Millionaires paid the Cardinals a visit for an afternoon game.

Dylan Tye had the start for Yorkton, giving up two runs on six hits, striking out six.

The Cardinals scored one in the sixth, coming on a bases loaded balk, before the Mills plated two in the seventh and added one in the eighth for the win.

Offensively Colley had a double, and a stolen base,

Cardinal manager Bill Sobkow said his team needed some hits at key times Sunday.

"The other team ended up getting some timely hits and we never got the timely hits," he said.

But Sobkow said there were some positives to take from the loss.

"Our guys pitched well" he said, adding the defence was solid as well.

Sobkow said after the game Sunday he does think the hits will come.

"I truly believe we have the guys," he said, pointing to players such as Colley, Gabe Cook and Tory Bell as guys who were "good hitters in their colleges."

Sobkow said once the players get used to the idea of using wood bat, and understand WMBL pitching, the hits should come.

Monday night Weyburn was in Yorkton at Jubilee Park.

Weyburn struck first with a pair in the second, but Yorkton scored one in their half of the inning, then tied it with one in the third.

The Beavers would break it open with four in the eighth off Manning who took the loss giving up four hits, and four runs, two of them earned.

The Cardinals would score one in the ninth on a bases loaded walk, but Yorkton would lose the game leaving the bases full.

Sobkow said it was another night where the hits didn't come at critical times, like the bases loaded situation in the ninth inning.

The Cardinal coach said the lack of hits wasted a great starting pitching performance by Jamie Whitehead who went six, scattering four hits while giving up only two earned runs and striking out six.

"I have a lot of confidence in him," said Sobkow.

What the third loss in a row does is lend some urgency to a doubleheader in Weyburn Thursday.

"No doubt about it we have to win in games against teams in our own division," said Sobkow, adding they have to hit better to do that, something the team will work on in practice this week.

The Cardinals next home action is against division rival Melville with action scheduled for Saturday at Jubilee Park.
