Cards rained out at home, win big in Queen City

The Yorkton Cardinals have been struggling in the Western Major Baseball League, going only three-and-seven over their last 10-games. The Cardinals are left with an overall record of 5-10, and a spot in the basement of the WMBL East Division.

The Yorkton Cardinals and Edmonton Prospects were into the third inning of play last Thursday evening at Yorkton's Jubilee Park before the rain came down in buckets for nearly half an hour, flooding the parking lot. Yorkton's home schedule continues this week.

The Yorkton Cardinals have been struggling in the Western Major Baseball League, going only three-and-seven over their last 10-games.

The Cardinals are left with an overall record of 5-10, and a spot in the basement of the WMBL East Division.

Yorkton sits 6.5 games behind division-leading Regina, but only one-game behind third place Weyburn, Melville sits second 3.5-games out of first.

On Saturday, the Cardinals showed they can compete with the front-running Red Sox taking a 12-4 road win. The Cardinals had 16 hits in the game, four of those by Jon Mihic. Duncan McAlpine had a three RBI game for the Cardinals, and a home run.

Jeff Chase started in the mound for Yorkton, tossing six innings, giving up one run on four hits, and recording seven strikeouts. The win evens Chase's record at 2-2. The Cardinals were supposed to host Edmonton for games Thursday and Friday at Jubilee Park. The game started Thursday, but was suspended due to rain before the official five innings were played. The games were also suspended Friday.

Last WednesdayYorkton was in Weyburn for a critical inter-divisional match-up last Wednesday, falling to the Beavers 7-2.

Stephen Johnson started the game for Yorkton, going five innings. He would allow only one run and two hits before giving way to Joie Dunyon.

Dunyon would give up three runs on two hits, and would be tagged with the loss.

Yorkton had an early lead, scoring their two runs in the third inning, but the Beavers scored one in the fifth, then added three in both the seventh and eighth innings for the win.

Upcoming games this week have Yorkton scheduled to host the Weyburn Beavers in a match slated for Monday night at Jubilee Park. Due to the newspaper's altered press time for the Canada Day holiday, results of that action weren't available. Yorkton then heads out on the road for dates in Moose Jaw to play the Miller Express and Melville for a match with the Millionaires.The Cardinals then return to home park for their Canada Day classic to host the Mills in a back-to-back rematch with their highway 10 rivals.
